Why You Cannot Fully Hide Your Phone Number on WhatsApp
Every WhatsApp account is tied to a verified phone number, and that link cannot be broken from within the app. There is no “hide number” toggle in Settings. What the available privacy controls do is limit who sees your number displayed in chats, group info, and profiles — not whether the number exists on the account.
Usernames are optional and rolling out gradually. Reservations opened on June 29, 2026, in Settings > Account > Username, as WhatsApp said when it announced username reservations. A username doesn’t replace your number: WhatsApp’s FAQ on usernames says a phone number is still required, and people who have your number can still contact you by it.
As the WhatsApp article on Wikipedia notes, the service requires a mobile phone number to register. The number stays tied to the account, so every privacy control works on top of it rather than replacing it.
Common mistake: Assuming that changing your profile photo visibility, turning off Last Seen, or hiding your About section hides your phone number. Those settings control different things entirely.
Your Options for Keeping Your Number Private on WhatsApp
| Option | What it hides | Requirement | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp Username | Your number from anyone who hasn’t saved it | Account already exists; feature must have reached your account | Contacts who saved your number still see it; rolling out gradually |
| Username Key | Adds a second layer — new contacts need username + key to message you first | Username already set; opt-in via Username > Contact me by username > Username key | Does not hide your number from existing contacts |
| Groups privacy setting | Limits who can add you to groups | Settings > Privacy > Groups | Does not hide your number inside groups you are already in |
| Channels | Your number from other followers; your full number from admins who haven’t saved it | You follow a channel | Applies only inside channels |
| Business chat privacy | Your number when you first chat with a business, if it is hidden by default | Nothing to turn on; check the business’s name > Phone number privacy | Applies to business chats only |
How to set up each option
1. Reserve a WhatsApp username
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Account > Username.
- If the option is visible, tap it and enter your chosen username.
- If the name can’t be used, WhatsApp shows “This username is not available” or “Username is taken” — choose a different one.
- Save the username. When you message or call people who haven’t saved your number, they see your username instead of your number.
2. Enable a username key
- From Settings > Account > Username, tap Contact me by username.
- Turn on the username key. New contacts will now need both your username and the key to send you a first message.
3. Tighten group add permissions
- Go to Settings > Privacy > Groups.
- Change from Everyone (the default) to My contacts or My contacts except…
4. Check your number privacy with a WhatsApp Business account When you first chat with a WhatsApp Business account, your number may be hidden by default. To share it later: tap the business’s name > Phone number privacy > Share number.
Pro tip: Use the username and the Groups setting together. The username covers chats and calls with people who haven’t saved your number, while the Groups setting limits who can add you to groups, where member numbers can’t be hidden.
Risks and Limits
Groups remain the weakest point. WhatsApp doesn’t let you hide group members’ phone numbers in a group. For members who have set a username, group info shows the username — and the number only if you have saved them. Your own number remains visible to any group member who has saved your contact.
Communities expose your number to community admins and to people who have saved your number, and they may not be the only ones who can see it. Treat a community as more exposed than a one-to-one chat where the other person only knows your username.
Username rollout is gradual. If Settings > Account > Username does not appear, it has not reached your account yet.
Contacts who already have your number are unaffected by a username. If a contact saved your number before you set the username, they continue to see it.
Privacy is not anonymity. Even with a username and tight privacy settings, your account stays tied to your phone number. The EFF’s guide to choosing a secure messenger makes a related point: a phone number often identifies you personally, and an alias such as a username helps even when an app requires a number to sign up. A username limits who sees your number; it doesn’t make you anonymous. If you also use Telegram, hiding your number on Telegram works through that app’s own settings.
When You Don’t Want to Share Your Number at All
None of these settings take your number off the account. If you’d rather WhatsApp never had your personal number, the alternative is to register with a separate number that you keep for as long as you use the account, since the account stays tied to the number you sign up with. For that second line, a non-VoIP mobile number from the US or Australia is a safe choice, since it works here as it does with other services. A number you keep for sign-ups can also be a virtual one, provided carriers count it as mobile; numbers that run purely online and inboxes shared on receive-SMS sites are often refused, so it pays to know what to look for when choosing a number for WhatsApp.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I hide my number on WhatsApp completely? No. Every account needs a phone number, and usernames and privacy settings only limit who sees it. The page on why WhatsApp requires a phone number explains that requirement in detail.
Does setting a WhatsApp username remove my phone number from my account? No. The number stays on the account. A username means that people who message or call you without having saved your number will see the username rather than the number. Contacts who already saved your number continue to see it.
Who can see my phone number in WhatsApp groups and communities? In groups, WhatsApp doesn’t let you hide your number from other members. Members with a username will show that username in group info, but your number is still visible to anyone who has saved your contact. In communities, your number is visible to admins and to people who have saved your number, and they may not be the only ones.
What does the username key do, and do I need it? Without it, anyone who knows your username can send you a first message. With it enabled, a new contact needs both your username and the key. It is useful if you share your username publicly and want to filter who can initiate contact. It does not affect people who already have your number.
Can channel admins see my phone number? Not your full number, unless they have saved it. Followers also can’t see each other’s numbers or the admins’ numbers, so following a channel exposes less than joining a group.
